Residential Property, Leeds

Interior design concept for the living room and master bedroom.

The client had recently bought the property and was looking for design ideas for the living room and master bedroom. The property was fairly bland and was a blank canvas into which she was looking to inject some life and her personality . A fondness for stripes, checks and the country hunting lodge look combined with a tomboy feel was the initial design brief.

The client had a clear idea of what she did not like but was looking for guidance on how to create a cohesive scheme that pushed her design boundaries.

The living room was to become a calming yet bold space which would suit chilled nights in but would also be ideal for entertaining. Consideration needed to be given to the dining and kitchen, which lead directly off the living room via an open archway. The spaces needed to visually connect whilst work in these other two rooms was not part of the brief. The bedroom needed to exude a homely and cosy feel but could not be too feminine.

The client also had a keen interest in feng shui which had to be factored into the scheme. It was key to ensure any design choices did not go against the principles of feng shui, especially when organising the layout of rooms and the selection and placement of the furniture and accessories. The client, a health care practitioner, was keen to make sure her physical, mental and the health of her relationships was considered in the interior design in equal measures to the furniture, colouring and general design elements. The flow of energy was an integral part of the design being presented to the client.

Balancing the principles of feng shui with the client’s personal style whilst pushing her design boundaries made this a fun and challenging project to work on. Whilst the Western traditional style of architecture and interior decoration does not fully lend itself to feng shui due to the way houses are built, any home can adopt the principles of feng shui.

The amount of light in a space and the placement of furniture combined with introducing natural elements such as plants and flowers are easy and cost effective ways to bring good energy into your home.
