Residential Property, Leeds

Interior design concept for an open plan living/dining room.

The property was a period mid terrace. It benefited from high ceilings, and had retained some of the period detailing in the coving and fireplace in the living room. The open plan layout helped give the two rooms a light and airy feel.

The client had recently bought the property and felt the space was devoid of personality. It needed to be an adult space; stylish and bold with an element of fun whilst still being practical.

The client brief was to create a cohesive scheme for the living room and dining room. Each space had to have its own identity and reflect the client’s personality and love of retro and vintage inspired designs, whilst working as a whole and with the rest of the property.

The wall colour, Beauvais Lilac, is described as an enigmatic shade which was originally based on a number of colours found on the tapestries at the royal factory in Beauvais, Picardy. The wall colour created a stunning backdrop to the space, enhancing the proportions of the room and complementing the accents colours. Lamp black, a softer off black colour, made the fireplace surround stand out creating a focal point in the living room. The black was carried through into the dining room with black furniture. It was important to ensure each space worked independently whilst having a visual connection in the adjoining room.

Texture, colours and bold prints were important to incorporate the retro feel into the rooms. The hints of floral in the dining room curtains reflected the floral elements in the living room whilst working beautifully with the rich wood and black furniture. The retro inspired furniture was key to ensure each room had bags of personality. The different fabrics on the dining chairs and pops of colour added a playful feel whilst still being an adult space.

Matching statement lighting finished off the rooms perfectly adding a hint of glamour without being too pretentious.
